Is counselling for me?

Counselling can support people experiencing a pattern of chronic stress, exhaustion, and feeling overwhelmed that doesn’t resolve with rest alone

SHOULD YOU SEE A COUNSELLOR OR A PSYCHOLOGIST?

If you’re already overwhelmed, this question just adds to it. You don’t want a breakdown of qualifications.

You want to know: Who is actually going to help you function again?

HERE’S THE SIMPLE TRUTH

Both counsellors and psychologists can help.

But they do it differently.

PSYCHOLOGISTS

Psychologists are trained to:

  • assess and diagnose mental health conditions

  • treat clinical disorders like anxiety, depression, PTSD

  • use structured, evidence-based approaches

They often work within a medical framework and may follow a more formal treatment process.

This is a good fit if:

  • you want a formal diagnosis

  • you need reports (NDIS, workplace, etc.)

  • you’re looking for structured, clinical treatment

COUNSELLING (WHAT I DO)

Counselling is different.

It’s not about diagnosing you.

It’s about understanding:

  • what’s actually going on beneath the surface

  • why you’re stuck in certain patterns

  • and how to change it in a way that works in real life

Counsellors focus on helping you navigate:

  • stress

  • burnout

  • relationships

  • life pressure and transitions

This is a better fit if:

  • you’re still functioning—but struggling underneath

  • you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or at capacity

  • you don’t need a label—you need clarity and change

WHAT MOST PEOPLE GET WRONG

They think: “If I’m struggling, I must need a psychologist”

Not always.

If you’re:

  • still working

  • still showing up

  • still handling responsibility

…but it’s costing you more and more to do it…

you’re not broken, you’re overloaded

And that’s where counselling is often more effective.

THE REAL DIFFERENCE

Psychologists: diagnose and treat conditions

Counsellors: help you understand and change what’s driving the problem

Both matter.

But they serve different needs.

WHAT MATTERS MORE THAN THE TITLE

Here’s the part most people miss: The biggest factor in whether this works…

Is not the qualification.

It’s: whether the person actually understands you

Research consistently shows the relationship and fit are key drivers of outcomes in therapy.

HOW I WORK (SO YOU KNOW IF THIS IS RIGHT FOR YOU)

I don’t:

  • label you

  • rush you

  • or keep you stuck in endless sessions

I do:

  • identify what’s actually driving your burnout or overwhelm

  • help you stabilise quickly

  • give you practical ways to function again

IF YOU’RE STILL UNSURE

You don’t need to figure this out alone.

Start with a simple conversation:

We’ll work out:

  • what’s actually going on

  • whether counselling is right for you

  • or if you’d be better supported elsewhere

You don’t need to choose the “right title.”

You need to choose:
the right kind of help for where you are right now
